Chevron Seal

The main function of a chevron seal is to provide enough resistance in order to maintain the hydraulic pressure necessary to make the chevron move. They are internal to the cylinder head and seal against the cylinder bore, preventing fluid from flowing across the chevron. chevron seals for hydraulic cylinders separate the two pressure chambers on the rod and chevron side of the cylinder. Choosing the appropriate chevron seal for a given application is primarily dependent on how the cylinder operates i.e. in single-acting or double-acting operations. For single acting chevrons, high pressure on one side, low on the other, seal behaviour does not differ in principle from that of rod seals. Double acting chevron seals have to be symmetrical with reference to a radial plane, and the dynamic leakage is usually less important, as it remains within the actuator. Seals need to be designed in a manner so as there is always a possibility of a thin lubrication film that passing through the contact area between the seal and the cylinder tube surface. Wiper Seal

A hydraulic wiper or scraper prevents contamination of the hydraulic medium that could damage wear rings, rod seals and other components. Breakdowns and premature seal failure in a hydraulic system is primarily caused by contamination. As the piston rods retract into the system, they carry dust and other particles on its surface. The wiping lip of the scrapes keeps these particles outside the system preventing any destruction of the seal and damage to the moving surface.

Relative to its importance, the wiper seal is the most underrated seal in the hydraulic cylinder. The surrounding environment and service conditions must be taken into special consideration while choosing the wiper seal design. Various seal profiles of wipers include both single and double lip seals are available. The housing is kept open or closed depending upon both seal profiles and design specification. Ambica has developed special seal design to operate in the harshest of environment. Special care should be taken while installing the wipers.

Rod seals for hydraulic cylinders seal the system pressure on the rod side of the cylinder against the atmosphere. The seals need to withstand high pressures during the stroke phase as well as the position holding operation of the cylinder.
Rod seal or Gland seals as they are often called, exist in a wide variety of different types. When choosing a rod seal, it is important to define the area of application and the seals need to be chosen as per their specification and design requirement.
